The olfactory organs of 11 species from 3 suborders of the Atheriniformes were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In 3 species of the Exocoetoidei, Hemiramphus sajori, Cheilopogon agoo and Colorabis saira, the olfactory chamber is an open depression without the upper covering and contains one lamella arising transversely to the main axis of fish. In 4 species of the Cyprinodontoidei, Oryzias latipes, Lebistes reticulatus, Poecilia vittata and Gambusia affinis, the olfactory chamber has no lamellate structure. In 4 species of the Atherinoidei, Allanetta bleekeri, Atherion elymus, Hypoatherina tsurugae and Iso hawaiiensis, three lamellae arise from the floor of the olfactory chamber, parallel with one another and with the main axis of the fish. In spite of the variation in general shape, the olfactory organs show a similar surface feature in all species so far examined. The sensory epithelium is dispersed into many distinct islets separated by the indifferent epithelium. Type 2 ciliated cells (cells giving rise to several cilia from a hillock-like cell apex) and microvillous cells (cells bearing a tuft of numerous microvilli) are very densely crowded in the islets, while type 1 ciliated cells (cells giving rise to many cilia from the flat distal surface) are lacking entirely. Rod cells (cells protruding a simple rod from the distal surface) are infrequently found in the sensory islets. In Cheilopogon agoo, cells of an intermediate from between the rod cell and the type 2 ciliated cell were found.
