The olfactory organs of the catfishes, Parasilurus asotus and Pelteobagrus nudiceps, consist of 60-70 lamellae which are arranged along each side of the central raphe. The lamellae are covered uniformly with dense cilia arising from type 1 ciliated cells (cells giving rise to numerous cilia from a flat distal surface). They also contain type 2 ciliated cells (cells giving rise to several cilia radially from a hillock-like cell apex), microvillous cells (cells bearing a tuft of numerous microvilli) and rod cells (cells with a simple rod protruding from the distal surface). The olfactory organ of the catfish eel, Plotosus anguillaris, has no raphe, and consists of 5-7 lamellae which are arranged parallel to the rostro-caudal axis of the fish. On the lamellae, the sensory epithelium containing type 2 ciliated cells and microvillous cells is dispersed into many small islets separated by non-ciliated indifferent epithelium. Neither type 1 ciliated cells nor rod cells could be found.
