We recently found an easy and efficient method to remove the eyeballs of small fishes. A guppy, a medaka, a crucian carp or a goldfish was anesthetized and placed under a dissecting microscope, and the surface of its cornea was coated with N/10 NaOH or N/10 HNO_3 by means of a piece of cotton thread. The applied drug on the cornea was then soaked up with a piece of tissue paper in the shape of an acute-angled triangle. Just after this application the treated area became opaque and rough. After a few days the treated eyeball could be removed by means of tweezers without scissors, since oculomotor muscles and the optic nerve had disintegrated. After a few months the vacant eyehole was covered with surrounding regenerated epidermis. In contrast to customary methods, our method can be applied easily using readily obtainable drugs and enables us to blind even small fishes with little lethality.
