The choice of territorial sites in the cichlid fish Pelmatochromis pulcher was studied in relation to the presence of stationary objects. A group of two fish (Series A) or three fish (Series B) was introduced into a tank, which was divided into three compartments by wire nets having a vertical slit. Each time the fish passed through the slits, entered shelters in the compartments and left them was recorded for 1,800 consecutive seconds. All fish preferred side compartments to the middle one in the case of a shelter in each compartment or no shelter at all. When a shelter was present in one of the side compartments, the fish showed a tendency to stay together in that compartment, while when the shelter was only in the middle compartment, the dominant fish remained in that compartment and the other fish remained in the side ones. When two or three shelters were present in the tank, only the dominant fish occupied all the shelters, settling into one of them. The preference of shelters by the fish is discussed with reference to the spawning pattern of this species.
