The cichlid fish Pelmatochromis pulcher showed contrastive movement under bright and dark conditions. Under bright conditions, the fish swam toward a dark area and remained there stationary. When there was no shade, they settledstably near the bottom. Under pitch dark conditions, the fish continued to swim unstably for a long time. When a light beam was given, they swam toward the light source. Observations revealed that the critical intensity was between 0.8 and 0.2 lux. The sensory mechanism underlying these movements was discussed with reference to the fixation of visual images and the positive phototaxis.
