Excessive transitory migration of guppy populations from one compartment to another in a tank divided by an opaque septum with a narrow slit was analyzed. The excessive migration was reproducible in the same population in successive trials even at intervals as short as 30 min. Vision was ascertained to be the main sensory cue, because excessive migration did not occur using blinded fish , or normal fish in complete darkness. The supposition that migration occurs because the fish avoid their excretions was rejected, since the population migrated excessively from clean water to a milieu polluted with these substances. When the population was limited to a small space for some time preceding the trial, the excessive migration took place more quickly and to a greater extent. Therefore, population density pressure appears to be one of the releasing factors.
