Testosterone or estradiol, or both were administered to first-year summer frogs of Rana japonica, and the effects of these hormones on the gonads, the reproductive ducts and the thumb pad were examined histologically. No influence on the testes was observed in any of the experimental groups, but degenerative eggs were often seen in the ovaries of the hormone-treated frogs, especially in those of the combined testosterone and estradiol-treated frogs. The development of the Wolffian duct was remarkably stimulated by the injection of testosterone, and even more stimulative effect on the Wolffian duct was observed in the combined testosterone and estradiol-treated group. The application of estradiol alone had a slight effect on the development of the Wolffian duct. A distinct sexual difference was recognized in the effects of these hormones on the Wolffian duct. A remarkable hypertrophy of the Mullerian duct was observed in the estradiol-treated frogs. This response was slightly accelerated by the simultaneous injection of testosterone. Precocious development of the thumb pad was induced by the application of testosterone, and this response was more remarkable in the combined testosterone and estradiol-treated frogs.
