Mechanism Involved in Protective Effect of Pretreatment with Small Amounts of Cadmium on Testicular Injury by Large Cadmium Doses in Rats

By pretreatment with non-injurious small doses of cadimium, the selectively injurious effect of cadmium on the testis is well prevented. An experiment was undertaken to clarify the mechanism involved in this phenomenon. A non-injurious dose, 0.15mg of cadmium chloride was injected subcutaneously in adult male rats on the 2nd and 4th days before injection of injurious 1.5mg of cadmium chloride. Though testicular cadmium content which was measured at 2hr, 24hr and 10 days after the injection with large cadmium doses was higher in pretreated rats than in non-pretreated ones, testicular injury was far more conspicuous in the latter. The results, therefore, seem to indicate that the protective effect of the pretreatment with cadmium may not be ascribable to a diminishing uptake of cadmium by the testis.
