Injurious Effect of Cadmium on the Testis and the Caput Epididymidis in Hamsters Kept in Dark Environment

The testes of hamsters kept in constant darkness for 100 days was markedly diminished in weight to about one-third of those kept in cyclic or constant illumination for the same period. A single injection of cadmium produced marked damage to such atrophic testes as in healthy testes. Although atrophic testes induced by dark environment revealed typical injury by cadmium, the caput epididymidis of the animals caused no perceptible changes in structure to administered cadmium. On the contrary, the caput epididymidis in the hamsters under cyclic of persistent illumination resulted in a remarkably rapid degeneration by cadmium. The difference in response of the epididymis seems to indicate that the site of action of administered cadmium may not be in the spermatic artery-pampiniform plexus complex out of the testis but may be within the testis itself.
