The vitellogenesis in the "yolk cell" during statoblast formation of a fresh-water bryozoan, Pectinatella gelatinosa, has been examined by electronmicroscopy. In the "primordial yolk cell" deriving from the peritoneal cell, well developed mitochondria and many elements of rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum (rER) were seen, and lamellate arranged rERs were observed along the nuclear envelope. In the early stage of the vitellogenesis, small yolk granules began to appear in vacuoles associated with small vesicles. In the middle stage, small yolk granules were observed in vacuoles and dilated extremities of the flattened cisternae in the cytoplasmic area. A vacuole containing a small yolk granule was demonstrated to be the pinched-off product of the cisterna. From the above observations, it should be concluded that yolk granules are formed in the golgi apparatus. Concomitant with the formation of yolk granules, lipid droplets and glycogen granules are actively synthesized in the "yolk cell" and increase in amount. After that, cell organelles and membranous materials disappear completely through the action of lysosomes. In a matured statoblast having only deformed nuclei, these secretory granules entirely fill up the cytoplasm.
