The changes in fine structure of the cystigenous cells during statoblast formation in a fresh-water bryozoan, Pectinatella gelatinosa Oka, were studied using a transmission electron microscope. At the early stage, the cells in both the outer and inner layers of the cystigenous cup were columnar in shape and their organelles poorly developed. The cells of the outer cystigenous layer elongated gradually and the number of rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum increased. Golgi cisternae became visible an small aggregated vesicles near the nucleus. They increased in number and the granular contents began to appear. A chitinous sheet formed between the two cystigenous layers. In the inner cystigenous cells, glycogen granules and lipid droplets were synthesized and increased in number. In the middle stage, the outer cystigenous cells elongated further. Many electrondense granules formed in the Golgi apparatus, migrated toward the chitinous layer and appeared to be secreted by exocytosis. The inner cystigenous cells decreased in thickness and contained nutritive substances. In the late stage, the chitinous walls surrounded the cell membrane of the outer cystigenous cells, and then their cell organelles gradually disintegrated. The inner cystigenous cells became spindle-like in shape and the nutritive substances appeared more dense. In the equatorial plane of both capsule and annulus layer small clefts were observed between the dorsal and ventral halves. When a mature statoblast was examined by scanning electron microscope, regularly arranged hexagonal calumns were observed in the capsule. In the annulus layer, hexagonal columns were well developed. One large and several small pores in each lateral wall of these columns were found.
