Degenerative processes of adult zooids of Botryllus primigenus were studied histologically. At early phase D of the asexual reproductive cycle, the two siphons of the zooid are closed and many phagocytes appear around the branchial walls. At about the same time, cells of the digestive canal begin breaking off into the lumen, finally, the stomach and intestine are filled with the liberated cells, but do not contain phagocytes. On rare occasoins, the esophagus and stomach are taken in by the stomach and intestine in large fragments. The endostyle and brain also degenerate in early phase D. Those cells which have fallen off into the lumen of the stomach and intestine mostly degenerate in the lumen. Some of them, however, are extruded from the digestive canal when its walls break, and are then ingested by the phagocytes and transported by the blood. In late phase D, the heart stops beating. The stomach and intestine disappear completely and finally the refringent organ disintegrates. The whole presess of the degeneration of the zooid is completed in about a day. In those zooids which bear developing embryos, the tranchial aperture, digestive canal and heart degenerate at phase D just as in the case of zooids without embryos. The atrial aperture, blood pouch and brain of such zooids, however, survive the succeeding reproductive cycle and degenerate at phase D of that cycle, following the liberation of larvae during late phase C.
