Larvae of the sea spider crab, Trigonoplax unguiformis (De Haan), reared in the laboratory, reached first juvenile crab after undergoing three molts in zoeal stages. Major characteristics of each stage from the first zoea through young crab are described. The typical megalopa stage is abbreviated. In the first juvenile crab, natatory pleopods are absent ; however, the mouthparts bear many progressive and retogressive parts characteristic of the megalopa ; the abdomen shows an intermediate form between the last zoea and crab stages. The second juvenile crab, so-called here, is equivalent to the first crab of the prevalent crabs. The development of gills is also traced ; two gills on the wall of the fourth thoracic somite, which are called arthrobranchs because they are paired, first appear on the body wall nearer the junction with the limb and later migrate with the increment of body width to the inner part of the body wall.
