Electron Microscopic Investigations on the Striated Muscle of an Ephyra of Atorella sp.

The ephyra of Atorella sp. has a well developed circular muscle system which is constructed of cross-striated muscle cells. The muscle cells bear somewhat different structures from those of other striated muscles. Although the M-line, A and I bands, and Z-membrane are recognizable, they show following differences. a) The muscle cell is not syncytial, like the muscle cells in medusae. b) The sarcomere, H-zone, A and I bands, and myofilaments are very short. Thick and thin myofilaments measure about 0.6 μm and 0.35 μm in length, respectively. Their diameters, however, show similar values to those of other striated muscles. The sarcomere measures only 0.9 μm in its relaxed state. c) The Z-membrane is connected directly to the cell membrane at the proximal surface, and an accumulation of J-granules is sometimes observed. d) Membrane structures in the cell are very simple. There are no peculiar vesicles and sarcoplasmic reticular systems around the myofilaments.
