Specific Protein Synthesis of sea Urchin Micromeres during Differentiation

At the 16-cell stage of sea urchin embryos, micromeres were isolated from the other blastomeres. The isolated micromeres and a mixture of meso- and macromeres were separately cultured, and protein synthesis in the descendant cells was compared by gel electrophoresis. although both the micromeres and the other blastomeres synthesized similar sets of proteins at the early stage, the micromere descendants synthesized specific proteins when they formed spicules.
