The 11th Digital Signal Processing Symposium was successfully held at Hotel Monarque, Tottori, Japan, on November 7-8, 1996. The Symposium was sponsored by Digital Signal Processing Technical Group of the IEICE. Regardless of the inconvenient access to Tottori a total of 185 people attended and 125 papers, the largest number in the Symposium history, were presented in 24 sessions. The invited lecture "Trend of Virtual Reality Technology" was delivered by Prof. Hidehiko Kono of Musashi Institute of Technology. The editorial committee solicited paper submission from not only people who presented papers in the above Symposium but also people who are interested in digital signal processing. In response to the call for papers, 31 papers were submitted, of which 15 papers and 1 letter were accepted for publication in this Special Section under the usual reviewing process. As the Guest Editor, I would like to thank all authors for their submissions, reviewers for their useful comments and the editorial committee members for their kind cooperations. Finally, I express my sincere thanks to Prof. Yoshio Itoh for his patient secretarial works.
