Estimation of Skull & Cortex surface from the Scalp boundary.

To estimate inner shells of human head, skull and cortex, from the outer surface of the scalp we propose a statistical approach. For the analysis, shell boundaries are extracted from multiple sets MRI Data of normal subjects. Since the shells are co-axial all measurement is done relative to specific center. The center of the coordinate system is fixed to the intersection point of Nose Bridge, left and right ear point. Extracted shell boundaries are interpolated and tessellated in to triangular mesh. Depth of skull and cortex are calculated for each solid angle of the triangular mesh. In order to fit the shell depth and shell ratio data, liner regression analysis is employed to estimate the parameters of the model. A test subject MRI is used to calculate the goodness of fit of the model. The scalp boundary measured from MR image is applied to our proposed model and estimates the skull boundary and cortex boundary. The result is compared with the real skull and cortex shape. The scalp′s outer surface can be measured by a digitizer like ISOTRAK, keeping the center of the coordinate system same as previous. Using the proposed method inner shells can be measured without any help of tomographic image.
