To clarity the construction and function of the lamina muscularis mucosae, the human esophagus with patient consent has been studied by immunohistochemistrical techniques as well as scanning electron microscopy combined with chemical digestion. The treatment of the esophageal tissue with 6N NaOH at 60℃ for 10 min., or with 8N Hcl, 37℃ for 3hrs. resulted in digestion of connective tissues, and exposed the lamina muscularis mucosae. The smooth muscle cells of the lamina muscularis mucosae were considerably small in size, elongated, ran longitudinally and formed a thin sheet with muscular bundles. In addition, their intercellular junctions had positive reactions for anticonnexin 43 antibody.
