Xiphisternum hyaline cartilages from aged rats (27 months old) were compared histochemically in two groups, rats of group 1 fed with a conventional diet (F2 powder, Funabashi Farm Co. Ltd.) and those of group 2 fed with a diet containing 10,000 ppm lyophylized powder of Streptococcus faecalis., In the cartilage of the former group of rats (Group I) contents of metal salt aggregates and collagen fibers increased and chondroitin sulfate B type, probably containing kerato-sulfate in the matrix, were found, whereas the cartilage of most of the latter animals (Group II) kept its normal composition, as seen in those of 6 months of age. These results may suggest the role of intestinal bacteria playing a potentiator for maintenance of the homeostatic mechanism in animal tissues.
