The degenerative changes in the floor portion of the third ventricle of the rats were inve igated by fluorescence histochemistry and electron microscopyafter administration of an anthelmintic, kainic acid (10-40 mg/kg). Catecholamine fluorescence in the arcuate nucleus and the external layer of the median eminence was markedly depleted and almost disappeared 2hr after adrrninistration. Light microscopically, the nerve cells of the arcuate nucleus showed strong vacuolization and pyknotic changes simultaneously. Electron microscopically, the cytoplasrnic degenerative changes and massively dilated dendritic profiles were observed in the arcuate nucleus. The dense cored vesicles were decreased in number and electron dense bodies and myelin figures appeared in the nerve endings of the external layer of the median eminence.
