In Japan, various kinds of psychotherapy have been applied in psychosomatic medicine (PSM). To improve clinical practice, we have to understand the present status of psychotherapy. Hence, we conducted a questionnaire survey of the main psychotherapeutic methods, which were following : autogenic training (AT), brief psychotherapy (BR), behavior therapy (BT), transactional analysis, family therapy, biofeedback therapy (BF), psychoanalysis, and Morita therapy. The questionnaire was mailed to 465 doctors who specialized in PSM. More than 90 percent of 219 respondents knew about all the methods. Over half of the respondents were using BR, AT or BT, while only one-third of them were using BF. Every method was understood to be effective. However, when asked about the treatment effects regarding physical, behavioral and emotional aspects, it was only in the physical aspect that over half of the BF users answered that BF was either very or fairly effective.
