Based on data from many deep-sea drillings and oil and gas drillings on land, several types of patterns are recognized in the ion concentrations of interstitial solutions. Assuming that these interstitial solutions originated from sea water having the same chemical composition as present sea water, they should have differentiated during diagenetic processes not only by interaction with the sediments and mixing with various kinds of hydrothermal, surface, and other connate solutions, but also by migration of the solutes and/or solvants of the interstitial solutions them-selves. There are several differences in the patterns of ion concentrations, especially the concentrations of Mg^<++> and K^+, between an ideal model in the drill cores and a possible one estimated from the chemical changes of the Tertiary pyroclastic rocks.
