The thick pile of Neogene sediments in the Uetsu geosyncline in Japan comprises a large amount of pyroclastic materials which are subject to various kinds of metamorphism, Among them, diagenetic metamorphism prevailed almost all over the area where most of the Neogene sediments are classified into rocks of the following five zones according to the specific assemblage of authigenic minerals; Zone I - Freshglass zone, Zone II - Clinoptilolite-mordenite zone, Zone III - Analcime-heulandite zone, Zone IV - Laumontite zone, Zone V - Albite zone. In a typical case, the five zones are distributed successively in the enumerated order. But usually, several variations in the combinations of the zones are recognized, which can be grouped into four types of zeolitic zoning according to the succession of zones and depth of burialas follows: (VH)-type, (H)-type, (M)-type, and (L)-type. Based on the petrographical and petrochemical properties of the zeolite rocks, the depths of the upper and lower front of the zeolite zones seem to have been controlled by temperature. On the other hand, with in the zeolite zones the migration of alkalis and alkali earths is inferred to be effective to give rise to distinct zeolitic zoning. Thus the classified types of zeolitic zonings may have been caused by the areal variation of the temperature gradient and mode of migration of the chemical components during zeolitization. Different types of zeolitic zoning are distributed in groups, giving rise to several different terranes in the Uetsu geosyncline. The (VH)-type is extended in the central Backbone Region where upheaval was most intense after Late Miocene. And the corresponding terrane coincides with the zones of Recent hot springs and volcanos. The (H)-type is extended on both sides of the (VH)-type terrane and the Dewa hilly land which is another area of Late Miocene upheaval. The (M)-type is mainly extended in the central basins where subsidence had continued from Miocene till Late Pliocene. And the (L)-type is extended to both margins of the Uetsu sedimentary basin where the center of subsidence was shifted remarkably through the Neogene Period.
