In the central uplifting area of the northern Fossa Magna Region, central Japan, the Neogene sediments are subjected to a unique alteration that the diagenesis is combined with the contact metamorphism without a clear boundary. According to the assemblage of authigenic minerals, they can be divided into seven zones from the contact metamorphism to the diagenesis in character, as follows: Zone 1……Hornblende-(biotite)-(chlorite)-plagioclase. Zone 2……Actinolite-(prehnite)-chlonte-plagioclase. Zone 3……Prehnite-(pumpellyite)-chlonte-epidote-plagioclase-(quartz). Zone 4……Chlorite-(epidote)-plagioclase-quartz. Zone 5……Laumontite-chlorite-(montmorillonite)-(epidote)-plagioclase-quartz. Zone 6……Analcime-(chlorite)-montmorillonite-quartz-opal. Zone 7……Clinoptilolite-mordenite-montmorillonite-(quartz) opal. In some areas, the Neogene sediments are superimposed by hydrothermal alterations comprising Roseki which is mainly composed of pyrophyllite and sericite. The zonal arrangement of authigenic minerals is often recognized in these altered rocks from the central part to the marginal part, as follows: Zone A……Quartz (residual silica). Zone B……Diaspore-(pyrophyllite)-quartz. Zone C……Kaolinite-(sericite)-quartz. Zone D……Pyrophyllite-(sericite)-quartz. Zone E……Sericite-quartz. Zone F……Sericite-chlorite-(epidote)-plagioclase-quartz. Zone G……Chlorite-(epidote)-plagioclase-quartz. Based on the distribution of the altered rocks, the writer concludes that the alterations of both types may have had a genetical relation with the activities of quartz diorite complexes which had intruded along a conspicuous tectonic line……the Muikamachi-Suwa line.
