A number of researches have been conducted on so called central cancer of the maxilla which has the highest frequency of occurrence clinically in the head-neck area. There have been, however, few researches undertaken on experimental carcinogenesis of the maxilla with the use of domestic rabbits. Considering a success in such a research would contribute greately to the basic research on human cancer of the maxilla, the author undertook the experiment. For the experiment, a bees wax-pellet (concentration 25%) containing 10mg of 9, 10-dimethy1-1, 2-benzanthracene was inserted by operation into the maxillary sinus of the domestic rabbits. The following results were obtained after an observation of development for about one year period : 1) Eleven of 16 domestic rabbits employed in the experiment survived over a year. In three survivors, tumorigenesis was observed. 2) X-ray examinations revealed destruction of the outer-wall of the maxillary sinus and warping to the left of the septum nasi. 3) The tumor filled the maxillary sinus and the direction of growth was even in all directions around the maxillary sinus in the cases 1 and 3. On the other hand, particular growth towards the upper and lower exterior was seen in the case 2. 4) Histopathologically, the tumor growth was of undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma in the cases 1 and 2, and keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma in the case 3. Very close similarity with those of human being was observed. No correlation was found between the direction of growth and differentiated grade of tumor. 5) The cases with carcinogenesis did not show metastasis. 6) On histogenesis, the process of carcinogenesis started from the prolific layer of the basal cells of the cylindrical epitherium to the metaplastic layer of the squamous cells, and finally to the tumor cells.
