Academic Achievement of English-Speaking Students in a Japanese Immersion Program

• Achievement studies were undertaken to provide an indication of the success of the immersion students participating in the Japanese immersion program in Anchorage, Alaska. Data was collected from 51 students attending Grades 4 and 7 in partial-immersion programs. Students' achievement in mathematics, science, social studies, and English language skills was assessed with the California Achievement Tests (CAT/5). The results of the standardized test comparison indicate that, despite the linguistic distance between Japanese and English, immersion students significantly outperformed comparable regular students in mathematics, science, and their first language skills, and perform at the same level as regular students in social studies. This finding supports previous studies showing that immersion students in programs involving close language pairs attain comparable levels of academic achievement as students in regular programs. Finally, possible contributions of the findings from the present study to English Immersion programs in Japan are discussed.
