An extraction-spectrophotometric method for the determination of germanium is described. The method is based on the solvent extraction of the ionic associate formed between anionic germanium-pyrocatechol violet (PV) complex and tridodecylethylammonium bromide. The maximum absorbance of the extracted complex occurs at 560 nm. The distribution ratio and the molar absorptivity are 68.7 and 7.37 × 10^4 dm^3 mol^<-1> cm^<-1> respectively. The composition of the extracted complex is estimated to be (R_3 R'N)_4Ge(PV). The interference of foreign metal ions in the presence of EDTA is described.
