DETERMINATION OF VANADIUM IN SEAWATER BY GRAPHITE FURNACE ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY

Vanadium is extracted as the thiocyanato complex with capriquat (trioctylmethylammonium chloride) in benzene then back extracted with nitric acid into aqueous phase. The element is determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The method is simple, rapid and sensitive for the determination of vanadium. Various factors that can infuluence recovery and selectivity of the preconcentration process have been investigated in detail. The method has been applied to determine vanadium content of seawater. Boron carbidized cuvettes can be used to improve the sensitivity and the reproducibility for the determination of vanadium.
