SENSITIVE SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF VANADIUM(V) WITH A PYRIDYLAZO DYE

A sensitive and selective method for the determination of vanadium (V) with 2(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo) -5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) phenol(5-Br-PAPS) is described. Vanadium(V) reacts with 5-Br-PAPS in aqueous solution to form a 1:1 complex, which has an absorption maximum at 589 nm. The optimum pH range for the formation of the complex is from 4 to 5, and the molar absorptivity is 5.47 × 10^4 dm^3 mol^<-1> cm^<-1>. The log K value of the complex obtained by the ligand exchange method is 16.68. The interference of foreign ions decreases by the addition of cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CyDTA).
