A simple method for the spectrophotometric determination of chloride ion in solution utilizing chlorine generation was developed. One ml of sample solution containing not more than 80μg of chloride ion was taken in a chlorine generation vessel, and 50.0 ml of 3.6 M sulfuric acid was added, while 50.0 ml of water and 0.24 g of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6sulfonic acid) were taken into a chlorine absorption vessel. After an air pump, the chlorine generation vessel and the absorption vessel was connected in this order with silicon rubber tubing, 0.1 g of powdered potassium permanganate was added into the generation vessel and air was bubbled through the vessels for SOmin at the flow rate of 1.7 1/min. The color developed in the absorption vessel was measured at 415 nm or 647 nm. The calibration curves at 415 nm and 647 nm were linear in the range of 0^40 ng and 2〜80μg of chloride ion, respectively. The presence of Ag^+, T1^+, I^-, SO_3^<2->, and S_2O_2^<2-> ions decreased the absorbance of chloride ion, but Br^- ion tends to increase the absorbance of chloride ion. The relative standard deviation for five determination at 50 μg of chloride ion was 1.5 %. The method was successfully applied to the determination of chloride ion in copper sulfate plating preparations.
