CHEMICAL SHIFT OF OH PROTONS OF ALKYLPHENOLS IN CARBON TETRACHLORIDE ETHYL ACETATE MIXED SOLVENT IN PRESENCE OF CADMIUM NITRATE

The OH protons of isomeric alkylphenols gave well-resolved NMR signals in ethyl acetate-carbon tetrachloride mixture in the presence of cadmium nitrate. Typically, alkylphenols were dissolved in a concentration of 50 mol% in ethyl acetate which contained 50 ppm cadmium nitrate. The solution was diluted thirty times with carbon tetrachloride and then subjected to NMR measurement. The peak height and the chemical shift of the OH proton signals allowed the determination of isomeric alkylphenols such as cresols or xylenols.
