By the method similar to that reported previously, rheological analysis was carried out of penicillin (Pc) frementation broths in order to compare the flow curves obtained with those of Km or St fermentation broths. The rheograms of Pc fermentation broths showed the pseudo-viscous behavior in earlier phase of culture, and did in the later phase the pseudo-plastic behavior with apparantly dilatant-like tendencies. These dilatant-like tendencies the broths turned gradually to the pseudo-plastic behavior as fermentation proceeded.To illustrate these dilatant-like tendencies, effects of particle size and amount of various ion exchange resins as models of pellets suspended in carboxymethyl-cellulose (C.M.C.) solution upon flow curves were investigated. The experimental results showed that these dilatant-like tendencies were induced by the effect of sedimentation velocity of resins suspended in C.M.C. solutions.The author derived a simple formula for computing plastic viscosity (η') and yield stress (So), and then the values of some fermentation broths were compared using this formula.The followings are the maximum values obtained by this formula with fermentation broths dealt with. Km : η'=91.73 (cP), So=4.45 (dynes/cm^2); St : η'=28.89,So=2.25; Pc., η'=23.56,So=1.37.
