Sasa tokugawana began to sprout in early May when the air temperature was estimated to be about 12℃. Most of shoots came out by late June and continued to grow up to the middle of July. New branches were found on various parts, such as the old culms and leafless culms but few were found on the new culms. Most branching positions were found near the ground surface, but 23% of them were 40 cm or more above the ground. The better growth of branches was found at the lower branching positions. The number of old leaves decreased through out the growing season, but 36% of the leaves which were observed in late April still remained to the end of September. Subterranean culms numbered about 760〜880/m^2. Rhizomes, having far larger diameters than culms, were located about 15〜20cm in depth, and their total length reached about 160 m/m^2 on the average. The density of the growing points of the rhizomes was 15.5/m^2 on the average. The characteristics of the aerial parts of Sasa tokugawana are rather more similar to those of Sasa section species than to Monilicladae section species to which Sasa tokugawana belongs, but characteristics of the subterranean parts are peculiar.
