Nitrogen mineralization and nitrifying activity were compared between different soil types of brown forest soils (dry brown forest soil : B_B, and moderately moist brown forest soil : B_D) in Tokyo University Forest in Aichi. The mineralizing activity was highest in the F layer of the B_B soil. The inorganic nitrogen released from the F layer sample during 60 days of incubation was 1.4 mg/g dry matter which was 11.9 percent of the total nitrogen. Most of the inorganic nitrogen released from the samples of the B_B soil was in the ammonia form. Calcium carbonate and ammonium sulfate were not effective agents for accerelating nitrification. The mineralizing activity of the B_D soil was highest in the A_1 horizon, and the inorganic nitrogen released during incubation was mostly in the nitrate form. The amount of mineralized nitrogen in the B_B soil during 60 days incubation, calculated on a per unit area basis, was 30 percent of that in the B_D soil, and the nitrified nitrogen in the B_B soil was only 5 percent of that in the B_D soil.
