The constituents of the essential oil from the Spruce oleoresin, oleoresin of Picea jezoensis CARR., which had been oftained by 50% sulfuric acid stimulation were studied.Its physical and chemical properties were as follows : d^<20>_4=0.8698 [α]_D^<23.5>=-14.41°n^<20>_D=1.4759 A.V.=0.49 S.V.=5.49 E.V.=5.00 E.V. after acetylation=5.69 It was then fractionated in vacuo into eight fractions and the following anstituents were identified.(1) α-Pinene (27%) Pinenenitrosochloride, m.p. 103〜104° and its nitrolpiperidine, m.p. 117〜118° were derived from the fraction, 67〜71°/41mm. Further, oxidation with potassium permanganate, according to MARCEL DELEPINE'S method, gave dl-pinonic acid, m.p. 102〜104°, which was identified as semicarbazone, m.p.206〜207°, having no depression in a mixed melting point.(2) Camphene (30%) It was identified from the fraction 71〜73°/41mm by conversion into a crystal, m.p. 194〜198°, possessing a typical odor of isoborneol from which p-nitrobenzoate, m.p. 129〜130° and phenylurethane, m.p. 136.5〜137°, showing no depression in a mixed melting point, were obtained.(3) β-Pinene (16%) On oxidizing the fraction 73〜76°/41mm with alkaline potassium permanganate, nopinic acid, m.p. 125〜126°, showing no depression in a mixed melting point, was derived.(4) β-Phellandrene (18%) It was identified from the fraction, 76〜78°/41mm and 81〜83°/41mm as β-nitrosite, m.p. 97〜98°, and was analyzed.(5) In the fraction, 85〜86°/41mm, some terpene (1%) which gave nitrosochloride, m.p. 97〜99° was found, but no further studies were made.(6) Bornylacetate (2%) Saponification Value of the fraction, 103〜120°/15mm, was 77.77.When the oil obtained by saponification was treated with BECKMANN'S reagent, it yielded a crystal which gave camphor-2,4-dinitrophenylhy-drazone, m.p. 176°, showing no depression in a mixed melting point. Besides, from the saponified solution, p-bromo-phenacylacetate, m.p. 84〜84.5°, showing no depression in a mixed melting point, was also derived.(7) α-Caryophyllene and β-Caryophyllene (3%) IN the higher boiling fraction, 118〜123°/11mm, α-caryophyllene and β-Caryophyllene were presumedly yielding nitrosochloride, m.p. 160°, and nitrosate, m.p. 159〜160°.
