To obtain the basic data for the examination of silvicultural systems that reflect nature conservation, the species diversity (H') and evenness (J') of several forest types in Mie Prefecture were investigated. In natural vegetation types, the subalpine coniferous forest has the least diversity because of the small number of species. Deciduous broadleaved forests in the mountane zone and evergreen oak-laurel forests in the submountane and lowland zones have very similar diversities. Warm-temperate coniferous forests, however, have low diversity regardless of the large number of species because of their higher dominance concentrations. In substitutional vegetation types, a coppice of evergreen broadleaved trees and a Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC.) forest are of high diversities because of their large number of species with week dominance concentrations. The plantations of Cryptomeria japonica D. DON and Chamaecyparis obtusa SIEB. et ZUCC., with strong dominance by a single, planted species, have the least diversities. The species diversity of the forest obviously is affected by both the number of species and the dominance concentration. Thus, to maintain a high diversity of woody species for nature conservation, silvicultural systems that are able not only to sustain a large number of species but also are able to restrain a concentration of dominance, are desired.
