The relationship between the cultivation process and respiration was investigated for aerobic cultures. Glucose was the sole carbon source. The following results were obtained.1. It was necessary to maintain a pH of at least 3 (medium range) for both the first and second growth phases to proceed normally.2. Under these conditions, repressed and derepressed cells were obtained during the first growth phase and at the end of the second growth phase, respectively.3. Even strongly repressed cells maintained a respiration activity of 30-40 μl/mg/hr, which corresponds to ca. 30% of that of derepressed cells.4. Derepression begins during the "adaptation phase" and proceeds up to the middle of the second growth phase, where at least two kinds of organic acid produced in the first growth phase are consumed by the cells.5. Repression and derepression cycles were reproduced in flask cultures when the inner atmosphere was aerobic and the pH was maintained above 3.
