Repression activities of certain intermediary metabolites involved in glycolysis were tested. The following methodical definition of catabolite repression was used to indicate repression activity. Catabolite repression is defined as "decreases in respiration activity in cells, while the cells utilize a certain substrate, for example, glucose, and the growth proceeds".It was determined that respiration activity in growing cells in lactate and pyruvate medium decreases during cultivation. With the supposition that repression is unfavourable for cells physiologically, and that the key metabolite is secreted during repression from the cells, identification of the key metabolite was carried out. It was concluded that pyruvate is the key metabolite for repression.
