Growth-substrate relationships in two sugar regimes (glucose and fructose) were examined in suspension cultures of tobacco cells in terms of the empirical equation proposed by Monod. A plot of 1/μ against 1/S for glucose concentration showed a linear correlation, giving μ_<max>=0.91 day^<-1> and K_s=0.25 g/l. Similarly, for fructose consumption, μ_<max>=0.92 day^<-1> and K_s=0.94 g/l were obtained for tobacco cell suspension culture. But in fructose medium, cellular growth at an initial fructose concentration of more than 10 g/l was often markedly inhibited, suggesting substrate inhibition. In addition, consumption of glucose and fructose in the medium containing both sugars as carbon sources is discussed.
