An Analytical Study of Adsorption and Desorption of γ-Linolenic Acid Ester Using CsY-Zeolite

A mathematical model based on intraparticle pore diffusion for the adsorption and desorption of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) ethyl ester by CsY-zeolite is proposed. The breakthrough and elution curves obtained with the model were in good agreement with the data. An analysis using this model suggested that the mass transfer rate within zeolite particles was limited by pore diffusion in the adsorption step. In the desorption step by n-hexane the estimated values of pore diffusivity were significantly smaller than those obtained in the adsorption step, and in the desorption step by n-hexane/ethanol GLA ethyl ester was eluted more rapidly with an increase of ethanol concentration.
