Thiobacillus ferrooxidans leached manganese from manganese dioxide in the presence of sulfide ores of copper (chalcocite-Cu_2S and covellite-CuS) as the sole source of energy. The amount of copper leache from the copper sulfides decreased with increasing concentrations of manganese dioxide while that of managanese leached increased with increasing manganese dioxide concentratons. The X-ray diffiractometric analysis of the sediments obtained after the leaching process indicated the formation of Cu(OH)_2 from Cu_2S and Cu_4SO_4(OH)_6 from CuS during manganese leaching, while CuS was the only compound detected in the absence of manganse dioxide. Possible leaching mechanism of manganes dioxide coexisting with copper sulfides are discussed.
