It is known that acid-insoluble managanese dioxide (Mn^<4+>) is solubilized as managanese sulfate (Mn^<2+>) during the growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans using elemental sulfur as its substrate. It is here erported that, like T.thiooxidans, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans could also solubilize managanese dioxide. The maximum yield of solubilized managanese was obtained when the concentrations of elemental sulfur, ferric sulfate to initiate the growth of the organism, and managanese dioxide (as the source of tetravalent managanese), and the inoculum size to start the process were 1%, 0.5%, 4% and 0.5×10^9 cells per ml, respectively, in a shake-culture of T.ferrooxidans strain AP-19 in 9 K medium (without ferrous sulfate) at 30℃ for 15 days.
