The effects of oxygen sypply on coenzyme Q_<10> (CoQ_<10>) production by Agrobacterium sp. KY-8588 were studied using 250 ml Erlenmeyer dlasks. A decrease in the oxygen absorption rate (OAR) was very effective for enhancing CoQ_<10> production. However, the optimum OAR for CoQ_<10> accumulation in broths was quite different from that for CoQ_<10> content in cells. The relationship between the growth level and the intracellular content of CoQ_<10> which corresponded to the CoQ_<10> amount in the broth, was found to be controlled by the oxygen supply. In a 5 l jar, the aeration-agitation effect on CoQ_<10> production was further investigated using the mutant KY-8593 and the parent strain KY-8588. The optimum agitation speed for CoQ_<10> amount in broths was 450 rpm irrespective of the strains. However, the culture of KY-8593 showed a wider tolerance for a renge of agitation speeds for CoQ_<10> production than that of KY-8588. At the optimum conditions, Agrobacterium sp. KY-8593 produced 211 mg/l broth of CoQ_<10>. In this case, the intracellular content of CoQ_<10> was 5.1 mg/g cell.
