For SCP-production it is very important to use a future oriented substrate as carbon source like methanol. The selected organism, Methylomonas clara, is an obligate methylotroph which assimilates methanol via the ribulose monophosphate pathway. The maximum possible cell mass production in contionuous culture in two different reactor systems was studied. The reactors compared were a normal stirred vessel with a flat blade turbine and a newly designed completely filled bioreactor with a draft tube and propeller. The maximum cell mass productivity achieved in continuous culture in both reactor systems was 11.7 g・l^<-1>・h<-1>, the maximum cell mass yield achieved was 0.5g of cells per g of methanol. At a methanol concentration in the inflow medium of 97.3g・l^<-1> washout of cells occurred at half the maximum dilution rate obtained with a methanol concentration of 50 g・l<-1>. Inhibitory by-products limited further growth, and the potenial respiration of the cells repressed. The proof for inhibition was experimentally demonstrated. It is proposed that inhibition is not a consequence of a single product, but a combination of by-products.
