To select a microorganism having high growth-rate, fermentor which can supply sufficient oxygen is necessary. The authors designed a new fermentor equipped with ball spargers and a foam controller which obviated the need for anti-foam agents. This new fermentor gave a K_La of 1,864 to 3,108 per hr at a working volume of 1,000 to 2,000 ml and an aeration rate of 3 to 25 vvm. In this fermentor, the productivity of a model yeast reached 4.02 g-cell per l per hr on methanol as the sole carbon source at 40℃ under atmospheric pressure.
