An apparatus for the automatic drawing of growth curves was proposed. Since pH controller operating time and the cell concentration or the activity of a culture broth are closely related, we constructed an apparatus which would integrate the pH controller operating time and draw the growth curves automatically. The apparatus consists of a recorder integrator and a constant voltage unit, and is driven by AC signal current from a pH controller. With this apparatus, growth curves or variations of activity of culture broths could be directly observed without consumption of broths or cells. The data obtained with this apparatus were in very good agreement with those obtained by the usual indirect methods (dried cell weight method or caluculated productivitiy from the dried cell weight and the dilution rate).
