Three methods of supplying a fixed amount of methanol into the culture broth of methanol-utilizing microorganisms were proposed. One method allowed methanol to be supplied in vapor form in flask culture. The other methods employed apparatus devised by us for supplying fermentor culture : one allowed mathanol to be supplied continuously in vapor form together with air; the other allowed supply in liquid form through a programmed automatic pump. In the absence of microorganisms, the methanol concentration in the medium could be controlled at a low level for a long time. In cultivations using Pichia methanothermo MO-104 as a model methanol-assimilating yeast, the growth was remarkably accelerated in comparison with the usual method. The lag phase of culture was shortened by about 10 hr in flask culture and 2.0-4.0 hr in fermentor culture.
