To explain oil-water interfacial area variations during the batch cultivation of microorganisms in media containing liquid hydrocarbons as the main carbon source, two hypotheses were proposed : 1) production of substances by the growing cell and 2) stabilization of the oil dispersion by the biomass. It was found that the variation of the oil concentration during the cell growth contributes to the interfacial area variations.
