A survey was conducted on the activated sludge systems of three large hotels in Tehran, in order to determine the efficiency of these plants in the treatment of sewage, and to make a microbiological examination of the activated sludges. Measurement of influent and effluent characteristics revealed that the treatment efficiency of all these systems was relatively low, even though in two of these cases the BOD/MLVSS loadings were in a suitable range. This was not surprising in view of the microbiological situation in the aeration tanks : only 16 bacterial species, classified into 9 genera, were detected and isolated. The low treatment efficiency is due to the low bacterial count in the activated sludge systems, which in turn can be attributed to Tehran's severe climatic and arid conditions. Methods for improving the performance of such activated sludge systems, and also alternative methods of wastewater treatment, are proposed.
