To examine the feasibility of improving microbial flocculation in the activated sludge system, sodium bentonite and ferric chloride were added to mixed liqour in an aeration thak and their effect on the activated sludge was investigated. The properties of the activated sludge were compared biochemically and physically both with and without sodium bentonite and ferric chloride. The respiration activity of activated sludge was not appreciably affected by the addition of sodium bentonite whith, being loosely held by the biomass, was easily carried over with effluent from the continuous system. The addition of ferric ions as an aid agent with sodium bentonite prevented the loss of the bentonite, and significantly improved the SVI, settling rate and filtration resistance of activated sludge, but exerted inhibitory effects on the respiration and substrate utilization rates of activated sludge. This inhibition was probably due to a physiological effect, with ferric ions and the activated sludge flocs reverting partly to a limiting mass transfer condirion. From the results it was conducted, contrary to expectations, that chemically treated activated sludge(using bentonite and ferric chloride) did not necessarily offer advantages to the treatment process. However, the results will be a useful reference data for the control of activated sludge systems because these chemical components often occur in sewage and natural water. Another possible application of the chemical additions was also discussed with reference to the results.
